You can build a monk around something other than single-target damage. Their DPS is so good, however, that they're worth it IMO. Really, it summons magical weapons called "The Long Pain fists." These do noticeably more damage than the monk's unarmed attacks, but because they count as ranged weapons and a ton of monk abilities only work for melee weapons they make a lot of other skills obsolete. The Long Pain turns your fists into ranged weapons (sort of).
However, there's a good chance that another party member could make good use of that weapon (it doesn't have any synergy with monks). If you're really serious about optimizing your character's DPS then consider using Good weapon instead of fists. Monk fists have better DPS than almost any weapon. The TL DR answer is that you should keep punching people. I suspect that you're badly under-leveled. You're not doing the White March content in the normal order! Cragholdt is harder than the rest of TWM1.
